Part 1 of a long series. I'm lash, and this is my weekly series on Games. Every week, I'll cover three games I think are worth playing. My tastes skew a little odd, and I focus mainly on low-cost games. Let's do this! Katawa Shoujo ![]() Genre: Visual Novel Website: http://www.katawa-shoujo.com/ 4chan does a visual novel. That's the story of how Katawa Shoujo came to be. Random 4channers saw a concept sketch and decided they could make a game from it. And they did. And it's actually worth playing. It is, essentially, a Choose Your Own Adventure game with pictures. The core gameplay revolves around blindly clicking until you get to a decision point. Then you save, pick a choice, and then save again. But I highlight this not for innovative gameplay. It's the story that makes this worth it. You "play" as Hisao, a normal teen. Without spoiling the game, Hisao ends up attending Yamaku High. Over the course of a semester, you wind up meeting an eccentric "genius", and strike up a friendship with a girl. There are five main paths the story branches along. They are all well-written, and will probably make you cry. I did. Katawa Shoujo did more than make me cry. It made me relate to a situation wildly different from my own. Seeing things through Hisao's eyes taught me a lot. It's a free download, released under a Creative Commons license. Give it a playthrough. Supertuxkart Genre: Racing Website: http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/ "If you liked Mario Kart, you'll probably like this." That's literally the best way to sum Supertuxkart up. It's yet another free game. Most of the tracks have the same polish you'd expect from Nintendo. Hurling cupcakes, throwing plungers, unleashing bowling balls. It plays quite a bit differently from any karting game, which is mostly a good thing. I've spent hours on the single-player campaign, and I have this as a Steam favorite. You can use pretty much any controller with this. Wiimote? Xbox 360? Both? It's a pretty good party game. The versus mode is where most of the fun is at. They've recently updated it with some multiplayer support, which means we'll soon be trading barbs on the cbox and blows in the race track. This is a game worth playing. Hedgewars ![]() Genre: Turn-based 2d Worms-like Website: http://www.hedgewars.org/ Worms was a game that shattered the PC world. The original game launched in an era where gaming consisted of either First Person Shooters or text based games, no in-between. Worms Armageddon changed my childhood. I played it, maybe for 20 hours of my life. Those were some of the best. Hedgewars brought back those memories, but better. Better, how? Try free. And cake. The gameplay is turn-based. You command a team of hedgehogs. Your goal is to kill the other teams off. A short countdown timer, and the limit of only controlling a single hedgehog means you have to get creative. Hedgewars feels like a Worms game. It has the same physics. Almost the same voices. And yet it does things better. It has a portal. It has a bubblegum gun. Played hotseat, it's a great way to spend an evening. In between sessions of Supertuxkart, Mario War, this made the perfect cap to my birthday party. It has online play, too. That's rather important. It's a game worth playing. A game you'll want to play with your friends. Over and over and over again. Edited by Lash, Mar 10 2015, 12:48 PM.
