Yesterday and Tomorrow [Work]; Part one of two: Memories of the Battlefield

Sniper
Blood came down from the skies in a mighty downpour. A loud shriek echoed out, pushing their hearing endurance to the limits. Feathers rained down as well, engulfing their surroundings as they exploded. An inferno rose up, burning up anyone who happened to be too close while also weathering down their attacks. Small orbs that homed on to them and distorted their senses. Crazed clones of an ally. A cage made up of bones to trap them in. Other orbs capable of shooting lasers everywhere.

All the while, their senses were distorted, their reality was distorted, Chaos invaded their bodies, and the city turned into a wrecked battlefield very fast. And in the middle of it all, a massive creature capable of growing wings and made up of nothing but pure Chaos.

Those weren't even all of the memories that the sight of the IFL Tower spurred within Kabuto, yet they were far more than he even wished to have in the first place. It had been a long time since he and Miss Kazumi had gotten themselves wrapped up in that disaster. Both the tower itself as well as the rest of Wilshire Hills looked good as new, almost as if they had never been wrecked in the first place. But that event very much did occur, and it would never be forgotten - not by human history, nor by anyone involved, directly or indirectly. And definitely not by the floating helmet.

The Wizard let out a low chuckle, but it was mirthless rather than joyous, bitter rather than sweet, and sad rather than happy. Here he was, a Battle Wizard who was beginning to dread the prospect of battling, rejecting his very nature in the process. But then, was that not simply a natural reaction? His first partner and his creator died before his eyes, and his current partner came way too close from sharing the same fate. The longer he continued battling, the closer Miss Kazumi would get to...

... Kabuto heaved a sigh. Speaking of his partner, just what was going on with her? Deciding to assist the GSP, who both of them had nothing but resentment towards? And then there was her leading them into the Bermuda Maze in search of danger. That was uncharacteristic of her. She never went looking for trouble like that. And for that matter, she had never shown any interest in the GSP whatsoever.

Just what was going on with his partner after all?

~~~~
Kabuto stopped his line of thoughts. He then paused to take in his current surroundings - he was travelling along the Wave Roads above the Spica Mall, which was burstling with people as usual. His goal was simple - patrol the area in search of any possible criminal activity. Miss Kazumi was currently occupied doing some shopping with her mother, so he was doing the rounds all by himself. Some of the Mr. Hertz and Wizards along his way stayed clear of him, likely due to instinctive fear of his gun, but otherwise nothing noteworthy had happened.
Still, dozing off like that was very unnecessary. That night patrol in Wilshire Hills, as well as the conversation he had with his partner afterwards, were stuck in his mind for some reason. It was quite peculiar - Kabuto was sure that he and Miss Kazumi had properly sorted things out then. He had already made peace with the fact that they were aiding the GSP, and even kept his existential crisis in check.
So why was that memory popping up so much? Was there something about Miss Kazumi that was still bothering him? Did she say something that disturbed him and he just hadn't noticed yet?
Ah, well. No use wasting time on that at the moment. Kabuto had a job to do, and he needed to do it diligently. He could dilly-dally all he wanted later.
"Man, what gives? How come the candy store isn't open already? I want to buy those new candy figurines they should be debutting today!"
"It is pretty weird... shouldn't it have been opened forty minutes ago?"
"Ah, don't worry, you two. Whoever is set to open the store must be running late. Let's come back later, okay?"
Kabuto caught a conversation coming from below. It was between a man and who he assumed to be the man's kids, a boy and a girl. They were standing just before the Candy Store, apparently discussing about it still being closed. The boy was throwing his hands up and down in anger, while the girl stared at the store in confusion with a finger stroking her chin. The adult was pretty nonchalant, and attempted to calm down the young boy while leading the both of them elsewhere.
The silver helmet gazed upon the store himself. It sure seemed to be closed at first glance, what with the 'CLOSED' sign right there upon the barred entrance door. Kabuto floated forward to take a closer look, but stopped before getting too close. Hm... either his sense were playing tricks on him, or there was an EM Wave Signature coming from the store. Quite strange for a store that was supposed to be closed. He could come up with a few plausible explanations, but he figured it would do him no harm to check it out for himself. He floated along the Wave Roads, following a path that led him straight inside the store.
However, once he got there, he had to immediately halt, because the scene there was quite troubling. Standing right in front of a counter was a plump man holding a switchblade to the throat of a scrawnier man. Beside them was a blue Wizard with a mean face, a Sword in his left arm and a Mad Vulcan in his right. The latter of which was pointed at the other two people in the store - an adult woman and a younger man - both dressed in uniform and running around dropping merchandise onto a large black hefty back by the plump man's foot.
"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, hurry up! Don't you care about what happens to your boss here?" The plump man grinned, holding the blade closer to his hostage's throat. The latter swallowed hard, but spoke up nonetheless.
"G-g-go... leave me behind and save yourselves, please..."
"Don't be stupid, boss." The woman said, her calm tone contrasting with the cold sweat dripping down her face. "This guy will be in more trouble than it's worth if he doesn't keep his word. You'll be alright as long as we-"
The woman yelped as bullets peppered the ground by her feet. "LESS TALKING, MORE FOCUSING ON YOUR TASK." The Wizard's mechanical voice rang out, the Mad Vulcan on its arm pouring off smoke. The woman picked up the pace, dumping more of the merchandise onto the bag, her younger coworker doing the same.
Kabuto grunted in disgust. There was no way he was going to let this slide without intervening. He had to act, and quickly. Judging by the fact that the Wizard was focused solely on the humans, he figured he hadn't been detected now, which meant the helmet had the element of surprise on his side. His plan of action was clear to him - a shot to the Wizard's right shoulder, to temporarily disable his usage of the vulcan. Then, as the plump man would be distracted by the first shot, he would receive a second shot to his own shoulder. With any luck, the hostage would be able to take that chance to break free from his agressor's grasp. From there, a simple help signal being sent out to the Mall's Security would tip the scales on Kabuto's side, and if the civilians ran away, he would be able to take down the Wizard without having to worry about them being harmed.
There was no time to waste. The silver Wizard aimed the gun upon his first target, the blue Wizard's right shoulder, and fired. However, as the sound of gunfire rang out across the air, another thing went across the air - Kabuto himself, who was tossed backwards by a powerful kickback that he was not prepared for. His prone body hit the Wave Road once, twice, three times, before it rolled to a halt, a few ways away from the store now.
The helmet groaned as he gathered himself. Where did that kickback come from? He knew the properties of the Judgment Gun pretty damn well considering it was his gun, so how come he was tossed about two meters back by simply firing it? Nothing of the sort happened when Miss Kazumi had used it against Alex, so what-
"The hell was that just now?!" Kabuto dropped his line of thought upon hearing the criminal's cry. Still lying on the Wave Road, the helmet rolled forwards a bit, getting closer to hear the rest of the conversation. "Was that your doing? I thought I told you to not send out any help signals!"
"I CAUGHT NO SIGNALS BEING SENT OUT, MASTER. IT WOULD SEEM A WAVE BEING WANDERED INTO HERE. JUDGING BY WHERE THE SHOT HIT, THEY MUST BE SOMEWHERE ABOVE US."
"Tch! Is it Mall Security? Whatever, just keep them occupied enough so I can get away! And you two, hurry up, or I'll slice and dice all three of you!"
Not good. He had to recover quickly. Kabuto rolled backwards for a few feet before he pushed himself off the Wave Road and resumed his floating again. Just in time, too, since the blue Wizard was now upon him.
"INTRUDER DETECTED! BEGINNING INTRUDER ELIMINATION PROTOCOL!" The eyes of the thug's Wizard began glowing red, as it raised both the Sword and Mad Vulcan up.
Kabuto quickly turned around and floated away. The blue Wizard gave chase, firing off its Mad Vulcan at the floating helmet's direction. Three of the five shots rang true, although they did little to deter the 'fleeing' Kabuto.
"DESIST OF YOUR SILLY ESCAPE ATTEMPTS! FAILURE IS YOUR ONLY POSSIBLE OUTCOME!" The blue Wizard said, its Vulcan reloading and firing again, with much the same results as before.
As for Kabuto, he figured he had gathered enough momentum already, and abruptly turned right back around, his movement never stopping as he charged straight towards the opposing Wizard's midsection, gun first and body spinning. The blue Wizard stopped on its tracks and raised its Sword, waiting for the charging helmet to come closer before swinging the blade horizontally in an attempt to bat him out of the sky. However, Kabuto had redirected his course slightly upwards as he approached, so when the Sword was swung, it passed just beneath him, harmlessly. The blue Wizard had no time to register this before Kabuto slammed against its head hard, knocking it down to the Wave Road's floor in an instant. Sparks flew from its head and the only sound it let out was static, indicating that it was out for the moment. Good - one down, one more to go.
The floating helmet pressed forwards, charging straight at a window and breaking it to enter into the store. It was only after performing this completely impulsive and reckless action that he realized what a terrible idea it was - especially when all eyes on the room fell upon him instantly. That unexpected kickback from earlier must have been pretty bad, because it apparently made Kabuto miss the fact that he wasn't managing his frequency properly.
"A-a flying gun?!" The plump man cried in shock, the grip on his switchblade loosening a bit. The scrawny man he held as hostage found courage in him and took advantage of that moment, bringing his foot down hard on his captor's. The latter cried in pain, but he quickly tightened his grip on the hostage and his weapon pretty quickly with that.
And that was all the urging Kabuto needed to act. Hastily training on the criminal's shoulder, the helmet fired the gun again, kickback be damned. Luckily, there was no kickback this time around - however, the single shot had come out as a spray of smaller shots, which hadn't been his plan. It worked just fine, though, as they still all struck their mark, the pain making the thug drop his switchblade knife. The hostage broke free form his grasp and pushed him aside, before grabbing the hefty bag by their feet and rushing to his employee's side. They, in turn, took cover behind Kabuto, who had gotten closer to the scene.
The plump man had been clutching his shoulders in pain and desperately gasping for air, head turned to the ground as his vision turned blurry. When he looked up, he found his bag nowhere near him, the store workers that were once at his mercy completely safe from his hold, and a floating helmet with a smoking gun atop it, trained directly on him.
"Hold on!"
Kabuto wouldn't hold on. The Wizard charged straight at the criminal, striking the man's stomach gun-first. The blow alone was enough to wind the man, and to add insult to injury, the impact tossed him into the store's register counter, his back slamming into it and forcing him into a stop. His eyes spun for a couple of seconds before his head fell against the counter, the man out like a light.
~~~~

Mall Security had been called, apprehending both the fainted man and his Wizard that was left behind on the Wave Road. After storing the merchandise back into their proper places, the manager and the two employees of the Candy Store were escorted out of the shopping mall and the store remained closed, much to the chagrin of the kids looking to buy the brand-new candy figurines. As for Kabuto, he was floating just outside the store talking to one of the security officers that had been called to the site. This time he was outside of visible frequency, though the officer was wearing Visualizers.

"A liaison of the GSP?"

Kabuto nodded. "The Community Partnership Patrol is an initiative where civilians help out the GSP by patrolling some areas in their stead. I unfortunately don't have access to the credentials at the moment, but my partner does, and she is here in this mall. We could spare the time to find her if you want to verify my story."

"Ah, that won't be necessary! I think it's pretty obvious you're all good, otherwise we'd be pretty screwed by now!" The officer let out a nervous laugh while scratching the back of his head. After a few seconds of laughing, the man abruptly sighed, his expression twisting into a frown. "But to think somebody would pull this kind of stuff in a mall, and in broad daylight to boot... man, we really slipped up on the security, didn't we?"

"Not at all." Kabuto shook itself in the same way a human would shake their head. "What's at fault here is this criminal's greed and audacity. You did what you could, and in the end of the day, people are safe and the merchandise wasn't stolen, so all is well." The helmet then turned to the shattered window, his voice taking a sheepish tone. "Uh, almost well. We'll pay for the damages I caused-"

"Nah, don't you worry about that. You were a hero to us today, so we'll cover that for you." The officer cracked a brilliantly white smile at the Wizard. "You just go do your thing. As for us, we'll crank up on security and put some Wizards to protect the place. You shouldn't have anything to worry about."

"If you insist, then I shall take my leave." Kabuto bowed to the officer. "Thanks for the assitance, Officer Smiles. May we meet again the future."

The officer saluted excitedly in response, before turning to the other officers and Security Wizards gathered around the store and addressing them. With that settled, Kabuto took to the Wave Roads again. Given that this area of the mall was now under tighter scrutiny, he shouldn't need to worry about it for the time being. He thought about continuing his patrolling elsewhere, but then he wondered whether Miss Kazumi and Miss Karen were done spending time together or not. He definitely didn't want to intrude on that, but at the same time, it would be a good time to give his partner a status report.

His mind made up, Kabuto travelled along the Wave Roads, intent to find Miss Kazumi, who should currently be on the other side of the mall. As he floated onwards, his mind inadvertedly returned to the memory of that night in Wilshire Hills.

~~~~
"So you were here, after all."
Kabuto turned around in surprise, and indeed, his partner was standing there before him. The Wizard remained in silence for a moment before he found his words.
"You didn't need to come and find me. I was just about to return to you."
"I figured I would find you so we could go call it a day, actually. That guy by the lake was just a harmless drunk, who happened to be someone who showed up for the same CPP Sign-up we did." The blonde took a moment to look at her surroundings, noting how quiet the streets were at this late hour. "I don't see any need to extend this patrol any further. Do you?"
"I suppose not." Kabuto shook himself to the sides. "Well then, shall we go?"
The helmet then began approaching the woman, but stopped after noticing that she had her head down, her gaze towards the ground as if she were pondering something.
"Something the matter?"
"... I'm sorry."
"Hm? I beg your pardon, but what was that?" He asked, not quite making out the words whispered by his partner.
"I said I'm sorry." Kazumi turned her head up and raised her sunglasses, revealing green eyes that stared intensely ahead. "I have neglected to consider you and your feelings with a lot of my recent actions. And as my partner, you deserve better treatment than that."
Kabuto was stunned in silence at his partner's words. Miss Kazumi apologizing at all was a rare occurence on its own, let alone without any prompting. Not just that, but she was revealing her eyes, which he knew she considered equal to revealing her soul, and if she was allowing him to gaze upon her soul, then she was really being serious with her words, even more so than usual for her.
Noticing no response from the helmet, the blonde moved on. "I've owed you a proper explanation as to why I'm allying with the GSP, which we both had bad experiences with in the past." The woman's hands balled into fists. "The main one was because I wanted to put myself out there, to be out in the battlefield. I want to be there whenever a new, insanely powerful Wave Warrior or an abomination of nature shows up to wreck everything, and I want to be ready to deal with it. And the best way to have that opportunity is to ally with the GSP."
"Wh-What are you saying?!" Kabuto uttered in bewilderment. "That's preposterous! I-I mean, I know you dislike being a spectator when such things happen, but why wouldou want to seek out danger like that?!"
Realising that his volume had been a bit louder than intended, Kabuto stopped speaking for a while, simulating a throat-clearing sound before continuing.
"What I mean to say is... where is this desire of yours to put your life in the line coming from? You never wanted to do anything of the sort before. All you wanted was to be a regular woman and live a regular life where you could spend your days doing what you liked. Battling was never a goal, and always just a means to make sure you'd be able to protect yourself and your mother from danger. So then, why? Why do you want to go and throw that all aside?"
"Because I realised my desire to live a regular life was a lost cause, Kabuto." Kazumi replied, her steely gaze never faltering. "I never asked to get involved with Fujiyoshi or read about what happened to the Whazzap Lines. Nor did I ever ask to get involved with Yukihana or the Chaos Abomination - all of those things happened due to circumstances out of my control."
Kabuto visibly winced. He knew quite well that those things had been his fault - he had seeked out both Ryuu and Fujiyoshi that day, just like he had seeked out Yukihana's secret base in the Junkyard, even if his memory of the latter was off. The green-eyed girl noticed her Wizard's reaction and clicked her tongue.
"Mind you, I'm not blaming you or anything. I'm just saying that I never chose for those things to happen. Just like I never chose to be a babysitter, or to start doing random virus-busting for Mom's friends... I never even asked to be a Wave Warrior, much less ever start to learn how to battle."
The blonde closed her eyes, turning her head down as her body began to tremble in anger and she clenched her fists very hard. "Almost every important thing that has happened in my life was something I had no control over, and I could hardly do anything about it." Kazumi raised her head, her open eyes narrowed into near slits as she spoke through grit teeth. "I don't want that. I want to put some direction in my life, and being in the battlefield is the direction I want."
The floating helmet remained in silence for a moment, absorbing his partner's words. On the one hand, he was surprised that she had been holding those feelings inside of her, and wondered just how long she had done so. And yet, on the other hand, something still bothered him.
"... My apologies, but I cannot fully believe you." Kabuto stated, with a rather cold tone to his voice. "If a direction is all you need, there are many other directions you could take, and I'm certain that there are quite a few that would fit you. You definitely have the option of keeping battling as only an emergency necessity instead of a way of life." The Wizard paused for a moment, considering his next words very carefully. "Miss Kazumi... are you sure you haven't become an... adrenaline junkie, for lack of a better term? After all, the whole reason we even went to Bermuda..."
Kabuto stopped, wincing slightly at the mere mention of that place. The events of that day were hazy in his memory, to the point where even trying to think about those events was enough to hurt his head a little. But he remembered enough to know that Kazumi had not led them into that labyrinth solely to train - they could have done that in many other safer places. He had the strong impression that his partner was there because she wanted a thrill.
The woman growled a bit, her lips and eyes twitching for a moment. Evidently, the mention of those days events caused her some degree of pain as well. She turned her head away and remained silent for a while.
"... I suppose I can't fully deny that. That would be the second reason why I wanted to ally with the GSP. My 'normal life'... it's not doing it for me anymore." Her facial expression changed, her eyes still narrowed but in a wistful way. "Something changed within me in that fateful day where this place was destroyed. As I sat on the hospital waiting for my injuries to heal, I felt bored - weirdly so. Even after I left and got to spend more time with my mother, you, and with my beloved books, I didn't feel satisfied. I knew I needed more, and I could tell that it was battling that I needed." Kazumi redirected her gaze towards her partner. "Being prepared to stop potential disasters, giving a direction to my life, and satisfying the thrill my body craves for... joining the GSP allows me to fulfill all of that. And also-"
"Stop it." Kabuto interrrupted her, his voice cracking a bit. "Don't do it to yourself... you have a parent that loves you, and many other beautiful things to live for... Don't toss your life away like that..." He was all but pleading her with that tone of voice, as he lowered his altitude a bit and turned himself towards the ground. "Please... I don't want to lead another partner to the grave."
"I have no intention of meeting an early grave. My life and yours will always be my top priority - no thrill or obligation to duty will ever blind me to that." The blonde crossed her arms below her chest as she narrowed her eyes at the helmet. "But I have another reason, you know - the final thing that convinced me to follow the path of the GSP. And that's to pay my debt with you."
"What?! Preposterous!" The Wizard shouted in anger. "You have no debt with you, and even if you did, there's no way that associating with those useless cops and their ilk would help me!"
"Wrong on both counts, actually." Kazumi said, completely deadpan and not skipping a beat. "I'm surprised you don't seem to realize what I'm talking about, given that you just mentioned it a few seconds ago.
At first, Kabuto was taken aback, unsure of what she was referring to. Then, realization hit him, and he froze. "Y-Y-You mean..."
"Yes, the whole reason you became my partner to begin with." The blonde closed her eyes and paused for a second. "To avenge the death of Kenji Sabaki, your deceased creator."
The Wizard started trembling uncontrolably as images flooded into his mind. A regular hunt turning out to be a trap. A desperate fight as they were caught in an ambush. A last-resort maneuver that killed one of their pursuers and left the others disoriented enough for them to run away. And the final words his partner had left him with, playing again and again in his mind.
"Get revenge for me, Kabuto."
Kazumi opened a single eye to check her partner's reaction, and visibly winced. Then she sighed and opened her other eye, staring straight at Kabuto. "The GSP have access to an extensive database of recorded criminals and Wave Warriors. Once we climb up the ranks enough, all we need to do is analyze that database, and with some patience we should be able to find the culprits easily enough."
"I-I..." The silver Wizard remained in his daze for a while, before literally shuddering in an attempt to shudder the memories away. "You mean, you really had me in your mind with your decision, after all?"
"Of course." The blonde cracked a faint smile. "You're my partner. I may do a bad job of showing it, but I've always cared about you."
"Miss Kazumi..." The helmet turned around, letting the back of him face his partner. "I... really have no desire for revenge anymore-"
"You're a terrible liar, you know that?" As she interrupted him, Kabuto could hear a low sigh. "You can't even look at my face when you say that, and you expect me to believe it? Are you really going to try and say that you wouldn't want to attack one of those people if they came across you?"
Kabuto winced. He really didn't have to give it much thought - if something like that happened, his first instinct would be to shoot on sight.
"You neglected to pursue that goal in a misguided attempt to keep me safe. I'm guessing you're afraid of losing me, just like my mom is." Kazumi went on. "But you should stop being so worried over me. We survived the Whazzap Lines, and we survived the attack on Wilshire Hills. Is that not proof enough that we can handle ourselves?"
"Yes, but even so-"
"So then, I want you to answer this next question based on what you want - stop thinking about me and my safety for a second. Are you willing to follow me as I walk the path to become a GSP? Or will you never be able to accept that?"
Based on what he wanted? He was merely a Battle Wizard, meant to serve and protect his master - how could his desires be of any importance?
... No. That was a stupid line of thought, and Kabuto knew it. He did have his own desires that were independent of Miss Kazumi or her safety - the Wizard Battle Tournament, for example. And the woman had gone along with that and other things, too. His desires were important, so now he had to ask, what was his prevalent desire? Protect his current partner at all costs, or get some closure on the death of his former master?
The Wizard heaved a sigh. The very thought of bringing another one of his partners to death, and even having to witness it again, it was terrifying. But he did want - no, need - closure over what happened to Master Kenji. He didn't know yet what closure that would be, whether it would be death to the gang of criminals that ambushed them, or whether simply putting them behind bars would suffice, or even if he would do something else entirely. Regardless, that was what he wanted to do, and if he had to ally with those detestable cops to achieve that goal, then he would do it, personal prejudices be damned.
And even stopping to think about Miss Kazumi's desires for a second, it was clear that she did really want to follow the path of the GSP. No matter how much he disagreed, or how dangerous it seemed, in the end, it was what she wanted, and he had to respect that. And well, for all it's worth, the woman's resentments towards the Police didn't just disappear, and he doubted she would end up becoming like the terrible cops that failed the both of them in the past.
"... Alright." Kabuto turned back aroud to face Miss Kazumi again. "I'll walk that path together with you. Although, it will be a little difficult to fully be aboard with it, considering my, well, reservations with the GSP."
"That's fine, I understand. It will be a bit hard for me too, to be honest." The green-eyed woman flashed a wide smile for a moment. And a beautiful smile it was indeed. It was short-lived, though, as her lips shifted back into Miss Kazumi's natural expression, and she also brought down the sunglasses over her eyes once more. "Now, I think we've talked enough for the night. Time to go home for real, this time."
~~~~

As he travelled along the mall's Wave Roads, the silver helmet with the golden gun couldn't help but heave a sigh and give an amused chuckle under his breath. It seemed like his mind focused a little too much on Yesterday and Tomorrow. He should probably start taking a page from Miss Kazumi's book and focus more on today.

And speaking of her, now that that memory played out in his mind once more, Kabuto realized there was still a couple of things bothering him about that talk. For one, was that man they met at the bridge really just a harmless drunk? Given how sudden his partner's apology had been and how different she acted compared to some of her behavior at the time, he couldn't shake the feeling that something happened when she met that man that caused a change of feelings inside of her.

There was one more thing, too. Miss Kazumi mentioned his previous master by name. That was peculiar, because he had absolutely no memory of ever mentioning to Master Kenji by name to her. Had she found that out on her own? And if so, how?

Something he would need to ask her for sure... if he could just focus hard enough on the present to actually find her, that was.
